Architecture of Kalisz

Kalisz is a city with county rights in the central-western Poland, situated on the Plateau Kalisz, over the Prosna, at the mouth Swędrni; the historical capital of Wielkopolska , the capital of Kalisz, the second largest center of the Wielkopolska Province, the seat of the Kalisz poviat, one of the two main centers of the Kalisz-Ostrów agglomeration andKalisko-Ostrowski Industrial District; headquarters of the curia of the Kalisz diocese.

From 1314 until the Second Partition of Poland, Kalisz was the capital of the Kalisz Voivodeship. Kalisz has obtained the right to store in the 1496 year. In the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, in Kalisz, there was a tax stewards’ office for Wielkopolska. Then he became the capital of the Kalisz department in the Duchy of Warsaw, in the Kingdom of Poland, the capital of the province (until 1837), later (in the years 1837-1845 and 1867-1918) the capital of the governorate. In the years 1975-1998 he was the capital of the Kalisz Voivodeship.

There are theaters, museums, philharmonics, numerous galleries and festivals. Developed media market – numerous local newspapers, radio, television.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the city center of Kalisz (95% destroyed in 1914) was reconstructed. The Main Market Square was rebuilt and the town hall with a high tower, reminiscent of the Renaissance tradition, was erected in the city for the third time. On the Main Square there is a so-called a tenement house with medallions depicting the bas-reliefs of four outstanding Kaliszans: Adam Asnyk, Maria Konopnicka, Stefan Szolc-Rogoziński and Maria Dąbrowska. Distinct features include: monastery complex o. Franciscans funded in 1256 by Prince Bolesław the Pious, the cathedral of St. Nicholas, fragments of city walls with the Dorotka tower from the fifteenth century, the late – renaissance Rector’s church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1607 in the Bernardine monastic complex, which in 1919 took the Jesuits, Orthodox church. Saint Apostles Peter and Paul, collegiate basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Sanctuary of St. Józef of Nazareth, a complex of the Jesuit college from the end of the 16th century, rebuilt in the 19th centuryon the classical office building (since 1999 the seat of the poviat eldership), the Baroque temple of Saint. Wojciech and Saint. Stanisław Biskupa, an urban park in the English style founded in 1798 (24.3 ha), situated on the banks of Prosna amid park greenery – the theater of them. Wojciech Bogusławski, former court of the nineteenth century (now the court), the Stone Bridge (the oldest in Kalisz), a monastic poreformacki complex with the church of St. Józef and Saint. Piotr of Alkantra from 1673, Rogatka Wrocławska from 1828, three historic denominational cemeteries: Evangelical (1689), Roman Catholic (1807), Orthodox (1786), neo-gothic churches dedicated to Saint. Gotarda and Saint. Michał Archanioła, archaeological reserve ” Kaliski Gród Piastów ” and wooden church of St. Wojciech at Zawodzie.

During the Kingdom of Poland in Kalisz, among others, Sylwester Szpilowski and Franciszek Reinstein, according to designs, were erected a number of monumental buildings with severe classical forms .
